Recognition Ceremony for Bill Hogharth, Director of Education YRDSB (Dec 02, 09)

We are pleased to announce that Toronto Iranians Community Group, along with 9 other Iranian organizations sponsored an event to recognize Bill Hogharth and presented him with a beautiful small Persian Rug .

The number of Iranians who choose to reside in York Region is on the rise. Recent data from the Reception Centre, where new students are received, shows that Farsi is one of the top five
languages spoken at the schools in this area. Every day, hundreds of our children and youth walk into schools in this region. Supporting children and showcasing their cultural background are crucial to their success.

One of the most supportive figures in this regard has been Bill Hogharth, the director of the YRDSB. He has always been very understanding and instrumental in addressing the needs of our
community. He has gone beyond his duty to support students of Persian descent. He has also been very encouraging in building relationship with our community and attending different community gatherings and fund-raising events.

In the ceremony, community expressed its appreciation and recognized Bill Hogharth for his directorship, generosity and openness

Tree Planting Festival on Earth Day (Apr 26)

We are glad to announce our participation on Earth Day Event on Sunday April 26, from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Downsview Park.

We will celebrate the Earth Day at Downsview Park and make our mark in the development of Canada’s First National Urban Park.

This year, the entertainment at Downsview Park’s Earth Day not only will be eco-entertaining and informative, but will be powered by green energy. Instead of using traditional generators to power the sound system on stage, this year’s PA system will be powered using the SoundCycle – a bicycle-powered energy source. 10 bikes will be provided and we will be scheduled to ride in half-hour intervals. Bikes will be on a stationary set-up.

The following festivities will also be hosted in the park:
The best in up-and-coming eco-focused musical entertainment by Mr. Something Something & the SoundCycle
The educational animal shows by the Canadian Raptor Conservatory and Reptilia.

Iranian Canadian Congress (ICC) Public Meeting November 11, 2007

Dear Iranians:

For the Iranian community in Canada, the time has come to form a powerful organization with a democratic structure to advance our social, economic and political interests, and to promote the greater integration of our community in Canadian life.

A group of concerned members of the community have worked together to develop goals, objectives and structure of a non religious, non partisan organization named “Iranian- Canadian Congress, ICC”. On 27 May 2007 the group invited more than 100 active members of the community for a presentation on the idea, structure and proposed bylaws. It was suggested that the bylaw be reviewed by a review committee, formed on the spot by volunteer members. The committee has completed its mandate and improved bylaw will be available for your review on http://www.iccongress.ca

The main objective of the ICC is “To uphold the interest of Iranian Canadian Community and their well being in social, economic, political and cultural spheres”. Complete objectives of the ICC are attached for your review.

As a prominent member of the community you are cordially invited to attend the public meeting of the ICC. Background, objectives, structure and bylaws of the organization will be presented. Your presence, suggestions and insights are appreciated.

Toronto Sun column on the protest of Iranian- Canadian on Wed. Sep 13
A group of 75 Iranian-Canadians demonstrated outside the Toronto Sun’s King St. E. offices at noon today to protest a column by Michael Coren calling for a tactical nuclear strike on Iran.

“I was shocked, both as a Canadian and as an Iranian,” said Niaz Salimi, director of the Canadian chapter of Centre for Thought, Dialogue and Human Rights in Iran.

“Freedom of speech is something we all hold dear, because we are directly suffering from the lack of that back home (in Iran). But should I use that to go and hurt you, damage you, damage the country? No.”

Others who participated in the peaceful rally said Coren’s column advocated genocide and bordered on hate speech — a claim denied by the newspaper.

The Sept. 2 column called for a “limited and tactical use of nuclear weapons to destroy Iran’s military facilities and its potential nuclear arsenal.”

Coren defended his column again today.

“It is a response to the threat by Iran to wipe out another nation state that has never done anything to them — Israel,” he said.

“One of the ironies about the demonstration today is that it would have been illegal in Iran,” he noted.

Omid, a 29-year-old PhD graduate who declined to give his last name, said The Sun should have killed the column before it was published.

“If this was calling for a nuclear strike against England, or the U.S. or Israel, they (The Sun) would have ignored it. This is not justifiable,” he said.

Jim Jennings, the Sun’s editor-in-chief, met briefly with the protestors and welcomed them, but he refused to apologize for the column as many in the group demanded.

“They have a right to make their opinions known. I’m concerned that there are a number of people in this group who have not read the columns,” Jennings said. “At no point did Michael say that genocide was appropriate … The Toronto Sun never advocated genocide

Active participation in the community is the core principal of our group. Iranian’s community has a strong contribution in Canada’s economy, science and technology (successful Iranian business people, doctors and professors are seen in companies, hospitals and universities); however there is poor participation in Canada’s politics. Bahar's candidacy is an opportunity for us to fill this gap and have a representative in City Council.

Please find below, her platform for the next Municipal Elections in Nov 2006:

Bahar Aminvaziri
I am running in Ward 26 for a safer, healthier and stronger community.

My priority list includes:
Lack of recreation space
Poverty amongst families and seniors
Childcare
Waiting lists
Waste management in high-rises.

In the last city election only 38% of Toronto voted. Let's lead by example and work together to make Ward 26 the first ward in Toronto to have a voter turnout of 60% or more!

I will soon be knocking on your door to hear your concerns and your expectations from your City Councilor. Until then, I'd like to invite you to read my daily blog entries on my website and follow me On the Campaign Trail. Also, if you'd like to keep in touch, please sign up for my newsletter
